ro

While working at the now defunct Brighton Artists Gallery, Ro began experimenting with photography using an old SLR, and continued to fiddle about with cameras on and off until 2003. It was not until spending time travelling the continent of Africa that he really caught the photography bug, capturing the everyday lives of the people he met with a simple point and click digital camera. In 2007, he invested in a ‘proper’ camera in memory of his grandfather. The majority of the images in this show were produced using that camera, and skills learnt ‘on the go’ rather than any formal teaching.

Over the last 9 years Ro has continued to be active within the music industry, touring with the likes of Help She Can’t Swim,The Young Republic and The Pack A.D. After a chance meeting at The Hanbury Ballroom, he became involved with The End Of The Road Festival, and was able to use his experience to assist them in putting together what became the ‘Best New Festival 2006’ at the UK Festival Awards. A keen supporter of new music, Ro was a co-founder of End Of The Road Records, releasing records for the likes of The Young Republic, Woodpigeon , Charlie Parr, Port O’Brien and The Low Anthem. He continues to work with the label and co-ordinates the Unsigned Stage at End of The Road. He is also involved with Brighton’s One Inch Badge Collective.

Having begun writing about music in the ill-fated LUV magazine, Ro has continued to be active in music journalism, and has been published in the likes of Clash, and The Line of Best Fit. His photography has been published around the world, including contributions to The Wire, Clash, Stoolpigeon, Exclaim!, Toronto Star, Evening Standard, Chatanooga Free Press, Word and Riot on the Rocks magazines.

Ro also is also a regular guest on BBC Southern Counties Radio’s Demo Panel, and has been a regular guest on the Simple Folk Radio show.

Through his regular Oh! Canada column and series of compilations Ro has become a champion of new Canadian music in the UK and Europe, and was invited to attend Halifax Pop Explosion to sit on a Panel entitled “Breaking the Band” at the Music Matters conference in 2010. During this visit he also appeared on CBC Radio 3.
